Taking baths in the onsen might be a problem now.

ONRYO

Ghosts have taken up residence in the onsen and luckily will not touch you unless you enter the onsen first. If you do, the ghosts will 'attach' themselves to you, following you around and depending on the character make things miserable. There are no ordinary ghosts but revenge ghosts. Luckily, nearly everyone has seen The Ring, The Grudge or a variety of Japanese horror focusing on the onryo. Those ghosts usually are seen in a white burial kimono, with long black hair that covers their face and skin that has turned paper white. They're very, very creepy.

Now, not all of the ghosts will look like this, though the onsen is Japanese, so there's plenty of restless spirits lurking. Characters might see a familiar face or two or ten in the crowd. These are spirits of vengeance, after all, and many characters here have wronged someone who is now dead. Or at least they feel like they've wronged the dead.

So, about what they do? That depends on the character's guilt. This could take the form of a guilty conscience or it could be simply that the character doesn't feel guilty but is, in the justice sense, very much guilty. The more guilt, the more ghosts will attach to the character. They can lash out at the people around the character - said ghosts usually target around the person, marking the person as cursed - or generally cause damage.

The more innocent a person, however, the more the ghosts will leave them alone. Some characters won't even be bothered by them. You might want to cling to those characters.

How do you get rid of them? There are three methods. Faith is the lowest rung. Faith in your friends, in your beliefs, in finding a way back home, some goal, whatever. As long as it is very strong then the ghosts will be held somewhat at bay and may do less damage. The second method is exorcism. Sadly there's only a few around here who can do this but it will banish the ghosts back to the onsen. Lastly, though, is atoning for that guilt. This one is vague and obviously very personalized. Some characters may not be able to do this simply because they don't care enough about what they've done or rationalise it away.

Last thing of note: If you manage to climb all the way up to the 13th floor without getting beheaded by hair or something, there is a bright red lock now on the doors which occasionally drips blood.

PAST MONSTERS

Because the more the merrier. And perhaps you enjoy tracing back how the safe places on the Plane were slowly whittled away.

OOC NOTES

As a general thing, just a reminder that it is ten times more fun to keep your friends guessing by, whenever possible, hiding that your character has a consequence or choice (or even an experiment cleverly masqueraded as a consequence)! We know that some consequences require it, but we also know you want to cackle maniacally in dark closets while hugging a skeleton, and this is sure to facilitate that.
